Updates On The Offseason: Part 1

Though the NFL offseason has just begun, there have been many shufflings and rumors swirling. The first part of the offseason update includes the releasing of longtime Jags' running back Fred Taylor and other longtime NFL stars , the franchise tag, and the retirement of Brett Favre.

Who has been released?

Fred Taylor was scheduled to make about $6 million next season, so getting rid of the 11-year veteran was no surprise since he is the backup to rising star Maurice Jones-Drew. Though Taylor never got the recognition he did throughout his career, he still has some years left in him. There are some teams that come to my mind that may have interest in signing Taylor to a short term contract. Teams such as the Patriots, Chargers, and possibly even the Eagles.

Other notable released NFL players include Bucs' Quarterback Jeff Garcia and Ravens' Cornerback Chris McAlister.

Who has received the Franchise Tag?

This offseason has been quite strange, with a punter and kicker both receiving the franchise tag. Not all the NFL teams have applied their tag yet, but some have:

• Matt Cassell - Patriots
• Brandon Jacobs - Giants
• Shayne Graham - Bengals
• Michael Koenen - Falcons

Brett Favre has FINALLY retired!

The aging Quarterback has officially announced his retirement. Favre will now have to sit at home and watch the NFL games, which is not familiar with Favre, since he has played in 269 consecutive games. The 'Iron Man' of the NFL will go down as one of the greatest QB's in NFL history. But stay tuned with Brett Favre's status, as you never know when he will decide to play again, especially since the Vikings have already showed interest in him.

Looking Back At The Brett Favre Trade

What a day for New York Jets' fans when they heard that longtime Packer Quarterback Brett Favre was headed to the Big Apple. I mean, the Jets haven't had a star QB like Brett Favre since that legend nicknamed Broadway Joe Namath. I mean, sure this franchise has competed lately, but never have they actually been a contender for the Super Bowl in recent memory. So when Brett Favre became a Jet, all the fans were as excited as Andy Reid eating his favorite Cheesesteak from Geno's. So what about Green Bay? Yes, they just lost their former MVP and the Lambeau Legend, but on the bright side, they finally got to see what Aaron Rodgers really was.

Okay, first we will look at how each Quarterback did this year. Brett Favre threw 2 more completions than Rodgers did, but Rodgers had 6 more touchdown passes. Also, Favre threw 22 picks, while Rodgers only threw 13. Rodgers also added 4 TD's on the ground, while Favre managed to get his aging legs into the endzone once. It appears that the young successor has succeeded over his master, but both missed the playoffs and the Jets did manage to get more wins than the Packers.

Well congratulations for Rodgers on beating out Brett Favre on the 2008 season. But wait a second. I'm pretty sure that neither the Jets or the Packers came out on top of the Brett Favre trade. So who did? Take a look at the Miami Dolphins. Yes, I know they had no involvment in the trade, but just look at what happened when Brett Favre arrived on Broadway. 2008 Comeback Player of the Year, Chad Pennington, was cut from the Jets, and signed by the Miami Dolphins. Sure, Chad threw less TD's (19), but he also threw the least amount of interceptions between the three (7). He also had the better rating (97.4). Also, he made the Dolphins into a contender, leading them into the playoffs after having a embarrassing 2007 season. Unbelievable, the Miami Dolphins actually came out on top of the Brett Favre trade. Who would have seen that one coming!

What we really loved about Ben's plan was the he addressed the defense with the first two picks (he even traded the 1st overal' to KC). We also loved that he selected QB Josh Freeman with their 2nd round selection. He signed notably Albert Haynesworth, Mike Goff, and Bryant Johnson.

Other entries has signed both Nmandi Asomugha and Haynesworth. Although this would improve them, its very unlikely this would occur.

We all know it's eventually going to come, but this time, it's coming hard.

Somewhere in that long five month thought process of Brett Favre deciding whether or not he is going to return to the NFL (I like to call this period: The Off Season), lurks a day that fans and players both enjoy: The start of NFL Free Agency.

This year, Free Agency starts on February 28th. On this day, owners and general managers will reach into their pocket, pull out their change, and come to terms with unrestricted free agents looking for a job. This is an important step in the off season, as well as improving a football team. Big name free agents will demand huge pay, and in return, owners will demand excellent performances.

NFL Free Agency Day is a holiday. It is a glorious time for the "NFL Nerd". And that's exactly what I am.

However, in order to sign big name free agents, you have to have the dough. (Joke: Except if you're the Redskins). In order for you to get prepared for the start of free agency, we will provide you with several, "Countdown To Free Agency" articles. These will keep you on your toes, and provide you with better information come that glorious last day in February. Rumor Mill: Houshmandzadeh Interested In Joining Philly

One of the league's top wideouts, T.J Houshmandzadeh, has spoken about where he wants to play next season. Since he is a free agent, Houshmandzadeh will be seeing many offers from around the league, including the Cincinatti Bengals. The Bengals have a chance to place the franchise tag on him, but reports have stated that the Bengals will not use the franchise tag on a wideout, even if it's their best receiver. So where will Houshmandzadeh play in 2009? Yesterday, he appeared on a Philadelphia radio station and was asked about his chances of playing for the Eagles:

"If the Eagles are interested in me, let's put it like this. If they'll be interested in me, I'll be interested in them," he said when asked if the Eagles would be his top choice... "Did you watch the Eagles and the Bengals game during the season? I was just giving Andy Reid an interview in person," Houshmandzadeh said. "That's all I was doing. I was giving him a three-month interview ahead of time. That's all."

Landing Houshmandzadeh would solve all the answers to their desperate need for a receiver. Possibly their weakest position, the Eagles have not had a #1 wideout since the departure of Terrell Owens. Their leading receiver last season was rookie DeSean Jackson, who reeled in 62 catches for 912 yards, but only scored twice during the regular season. Besides Jackson, the Eagles got no help from their receivers. Kevin Curtis was unable to play for the beginning portion of the season, and struggled to consistently play at a good level when he returned to action. Reggie Brown may have been the biggest disappointment for the Birds, as he couldn't even catch a cold during the season.

If the Eagles want to take the next step and play for the Lombardi Trophy, they must bring in a star receiver. Houshmandzadeh would easily fit that spot, since he had 30 more receptions than the Eagles leading receiver last season. Also, Houshmandzadeh had an off year in 2008, not nearly putting up the numbers he has put up in past seasons. This could stem from the Quarterback play in Cincinatti. Would Housmandzadeh rather have Ryan Fitzpatrick or Donovan McNabb throwing him passes? Yes, I know Carson Palmer will be back next season, but even then, I'm not sure if Palmer will be able to regain his former play. Just imagine the Eagles with a healthy Westbrook and T.J Housmandzadeh on the outside. Donovan McNabb could easily put up Pro Bowl numbers and finally lead his team to a Super Bowl victory.

Cardinals Hope to Avoid 'Super Bowl Hangover'

The Arizona Cardinals will have a lot on their wings when they fly into the off-season. Quarterback Kurt Warner is contemplating retirement, while key players Anquan Boldin, Edgerrin James, Adrian Wilson, and Karlos Dansby may seek work elsewhere. Oh, and by the way, they are the Super Bowl losers.

History has shown that in the last ten years, only three Super Bowl losing teams have come back to make the playoffs the following year. This is an astonishing statistic that causes many people to think, “Why does this happen?” Well, let’s take a look at the list of the last ten Super Bowl losers and try to figure out what caused such a dramatic letdown.

1997 - The Green Bay Packers lose to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII but manage to make the playoffs the following year with an 11-5 record.

1998 - The Atlanta Falcons lose to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII and fail to make playoffs the following year with a 5-11 record. Defense wins championships, and the Falcons proved they didn’t have one in 1999.

1999 - The Tennessee Titans lose to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV but manage to make the playoffs the following year (2000) with a 13-3 record.

2000 - The New York Giants lose to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2001) with a 7-9 record. Michael Strahan was the only bright star in 2001, breaking the NFL record for most sacks in a season.

2001 – The St. Louis Rams lose to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2002) with a 7-9 record. Kurt Warner broke his finger and only played in six games during a very disappointing season.

2002 - The Oakland Raiders lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2003) with a 4-12 record. Coach Bill Callahan proved to be the wrong guy as head honcho in Oakland and was canned after the season. Defensive struggles helped the Raiders lose seven games by a touchdown or less. It’s been all downhill for this franchise ever since.

2003 – The Carolina Panthers lose to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2004) with a 7-9 record. Injuries held this team to a 1-7 record after the first eight games of the season.

2004 – The Philadelphia Eagles lose to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2005) with a 6-10 record. Terrell Owens’ off-season suspension and an injury to Donovan McNabb proved costly to Philadelphia’s season.

2005 – The Seattle Seahawks lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL but manage to make the playoffs the following year (2006) with a 9-7 record.

2006 – The Chicago Bears lose to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI and fail to make the playoffs the following year (2007) with a 7-9 record. Off-season issues involving Tank Johnson and Lance Briggs, along with inconsistency at the quarterback position, led to this team’s demise.

2007 – The New England Patriots lose to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII and fail to make the playoffs this year (2008) with an 11-5 record. Sure, Tom Brady’s injury hurt, but this team should have made the playoffs. However, when it’s all said and finished…they didn’t.

So that leads us back to this year’s Super Bowl loser … the Arizona Cardinals. The pressure is on their shoulders to make the right decisions this off-season, and not have a meltdown once the regular season begins in September. Expect the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams to show some resurgence this year and challenge the reigning NFC Champs for the division title.

Offseason: Upcoming Important Dates

Welcome to the off season.
Population: Lots of businessmen, draft nerds, and college kids.

Now, don't let the name confuse you. The off season is everything but off. This is the time of the NFL "season" when contracts are negotiated, trades are made, coaches are fired, collegiate athletes are drafted, and "true" fans of their team are counting down the days to Week 1 of next season. Some fans even argue that it is the best time of the NFL season. While I disagree that it is the better portion of the season, I believe that the NFL off season is indeed very interesting. I mean, don't say that you don't create mock drafts of your own and even hold draft day parties. Truth is, we all love it. The off season is the time to recover from last season's woes and make up a million excuses as to why your team will hold up the Lombardi Trophy next year. The off season; when everybody is high on hopes.

Let's look at the upcoming schedule:

February 5th:
First day that teams may designate franchise or transition players.
Tomorrow is the first day in which teams may place the franchise tag on players. Each team gets one franchise tag to place on any unrestricted free agents they have. It is basically a one year guaranteed contract. Here is a list of the 2009 costs of placing a franchise tag on each position.

Still urging for some professional football? The pro bowl is still lurking in the dark. This upcoming Sunday, the AFC all stars and the NFC all stars will clash in Hawaii for conference supremacy. However, there are so many restrictions on this game, one could not possibly call this a football game. No blitzing? No interest! Being a fan of the game, I will tune indeed tune in. You should too.

February 18th-24th:
NFL Combine
The meeting place every year for NFL wannabees, NFL scouts, and NFL draft nerds. What a lovely combination. Like every year, the combine will be held in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. The combine is where collegiate players who are entering the NFL draft to workout and "show-off" their talent and skills. Draft stocks rise and fall faster than stocks in the stock market. If you show up and do very well, you could earn yourself a few hundred thousand or even a few million dollars more. If you show up and suck a muffin, you will most likely drop in the draft and lose out on the cold hard cash. Nothing better than seeing kids under pressure. Competition at its finest!

February 26th:
Deadline for teams to qualify offers to restricted free agents.
Restricted Free Agents are to receive offers from NFL teams, besides the team they are currently with, by this date.

Free Agency Begins
The big money day. Top free agents will fly off the free agency shelves at a high price. Will your team acquire a big name free agent to improve for next season? You can only hope. This is the last time an NFL team can improve their team before the NFL draft.

Team off season workouts and mini camps are allowed on this date. It's always nice to get an early look at your favorite NFL team, even if the practices aren't in-depth.

What new rules will be in place for next season? Well, this year, we saw the elimination of the force-out rule, the decision to defer to the second half during the coin toss, and instant replays covering field goals. All of which were decided at the annual NFL Meeting. Which rules will be put into place for the 2009 season? Stay tuned on these dates.

April 25th-26th:
2009 NFL Draft
The big kahuna. The pinnacle of the NFL off season. When college kids' dreams come true and fans get introduced to their team's next big stars. There is a lot that goes into the draft every year, as it has become a huge television event. The first round takes nearly 5 hours, but rating are always up. Who stares at the television for 15 minutes between every first round pick, all the while listening to Mike Mayock, Todd McShay, and Mel Kiper Jr strut their wings? True NFL fans.

The 2009 All Pigskin Pros Team

What a season! I mean, where should I begin? How about when Tom Brady went down in the 1st game, probably the only successful thing the Chiefs did all year. Then there was the battle between rookie Quarterbacks, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, both led there teams to the playoffs, with Flacco taking the Ravens to the AFC Championship. The Lions shocked the world, not in a good way, especially being the first team in history to finish 0-16! How about the old veteran QB's? Kurt Warner, Brett Favre, and Kerry Collins all provided leadership for their teams, with Kurt Warner just falling short of a third Super Bowl. How about that Super Bowl game? I mean, who would have thought the Cardinals would be battling the Steelers for the Lombardi trophy. Just look at how the playoffs went, with top seeds like the Giants and Titans all falling early in the playoffs. It was a crazy season, topped of with Santonio Holmes' game winning touchdown to conclude this wonderful season.

Enough with the chatter, it's time to announce the first ever 'All Pigskin Pros Team'. The selection process was rather difficult, with many varying opinions and tons of players left out. We managed to get by all the hassle of the selection process, and named our 2009 All Pigskin Pros Team.

Superbowl XLIII Analysis

Most of us are still in awe from the clashing of both super teams last night. Alot of experts predicted the Steelers to win in a very deciding fashion, and well, that just wasn't the case. Last year's superbowl put us on the edge of our seats, this year's made us jump out of them. There was around 100 million people in the television audience watching the game yesterday, and every single one of them witnessed a spectacular brawl.

First quarter action occurred like your typical football game. Steelers were the first to receive and on their first possession they marched down the field and ultimately settled for three points from the foot of Jeff Reed. In the first match up between the mighty offense and the tyrannical defense, the Pittsburgh Steelers came away with the win, forcing the Cardinals to punt. Cardinals fans started biting their nails early in the second quarter, when the Steelers amassed a drive that was capped off by Gary Russel's 1 yard touchdown run, which put the Steelers up 10-0.

Kurt Warner made the game interesting when he put the game back in reach for the Cardinals, when he connected with Ben Patrick for a 1 yard touchdown pass. Warner was being rushed, and threw off his backfoot, but placed it in the perfect spot for Patrick to grab. Late in the 2nd quarter, and after a Ben Roethlisberger interception, the Cardinals found themselves once again in the red zone, ready to take the lead. Down 10-7, with 18 seconds left, Warner dropped back and fired for Anquan Boldin. However, he found James Harrison, the NFL Defensive MVP who intercepted it and took it 100 yards to paydirt. Now, if you notice by looking at the video below, while on pursuit of Harrison, Larry Fitzgerald runs out of bounds and into one of his own players, who stalls him for a good 2 seconds, just enough to give Harrison those extra steps to make it into the end zone. The Steelers led at half, 17-7.



3rd quarter action was pretty dull. The Steelers however, continued their postseason ways, in not allowing their opponent to score during this quarter in postseason play this season.

Larry Fitzgerald caught a 1 yard lob from Kurt Warner with 7:33 left in the 4th quarter to make the game 20-14. Now, Steelers' fans were biting their nails. It would get even worse for the terrible towel fanatics when the Steelers would get called for holding in their own end zone, which resulted in a safety and 2 points for Arizona. The momentum was clearly on the Cardinals side, and they took advantage of it. 20-16 was the score, but not for long. Larry Fitzgerald would once again make a big play, connecting with Kurth Warner on a 64 yard touchdown reception that would actually put the cardinals up 23-20. The Cardinals came back from a 13-point deficit, and the football world was brought to the edge of it's seat.

One major factor that led to the Cardinals defeat; they left too much time on the clock for Ben Roethlisberger and the Steeler Offense to take the game. Roethlisberger is known for his 4th quarter comebacks, seeming always to find a way to win. And he did just that. He led his squad down the field to the Cardinal 7 yard line, and on 2nd down, he and Santonio Holmes connected on a pass-and-catch that may give David Tyree a run for his money. Roethlisberger pump-faked three times before throwing it to Santonio Holmes in the right corner of the endzone, as it was just above three Arizona defenders, and it was as if the football gods themselves placed it in the hands of Santonio Holmes. The Steelers went up 27-23, and that would be the final score of the game. MVP of the game was Santonio Holmes, although James Harrison and Ben Roethlisberger were also very deserving.

Superbowl XLIII will go down as one of the best battles for the Lombardi Trophy of all time. In my short lifetime, I cannot remember one with equal excitement, and that includes the Eagles-Patriots and Giants-Patriots superbowls of this decade. Cardinals fans might have felt pretty down about their lost chance at a victory, but they should hold their heads up high. They will be back. Steelers fans; congratulations. Enjoy your quest to fill up the fingers on the other hand. Now, it's time for the offseason. Champions are made in the offseason, or so they say. 2008 was a fantastic season, and we hope 2009 will follow in its steps.

You've read our "Road To The Superbowl" segments. You've read the head to head comparison of both superbowl squadrons. Now, it's time to pick a winner. It is time to man-up, put your cojones on the line, and make a bold prediction. However, this isn't any simple guess. This is the Superbowl. This alone makes it ten times harder than your regular, regular season game. You pick right, you're a hero. You pick wrong, your the Joey Harrington of game picks. Do you want to be a "Joey Harrington" of anything? I know I sure don't.

The Cardinals are the hotter team in my mind. Coming off impressive wins against Atlanta, Carolina, and Philadelphia can only mean one thing; they're for real. The Steelers, being the number two seed in the AFC tournament, were expected to defeat San Diego and Baltimore. And they did just that. One of the best offenses in the league, will go up against the best defense in the league. What the result of when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? A hell of a good football game. Kurt Warner will move the ball against the Pittsburgh defense. The weakest link of the Dick LeBeau defense is the secondary, and they will be no match for Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Breaston. I don't care if hair boy is lurking back there or not, he will have his hands full. Expect Anquan Boldin to have a big night here, as all the attention will be on Fitzgerald. The Steelers will not have a problem moving the ball on offense either, especially late in the game when the Cardinal's defense seems to disappear. I truly believe this is a game of "who wants it more?" Kurt Warner already has a ring. So does Ben Roethlisberger. Most experts see this as a Steelers blowout. I do not. I see this as an up and down game with many lead changes. This game will ultimately be decided in the mid-late 4th quarter, and I am going with the boys in red. Whisenhunt has been here. Tomlin...hasn't. I can trust Kurt Warner in the big game, but I can't trust the man who's nicknamed after a tower in London. Expect an upset; and gosh I sure hope I don't look dumb on Monday morning...

The Game Within The Game

When both teams take the field and set up for the kickoff, we are all on the edge of our seats, waiting for the start of Super Bowl 43. Whether you are at home in a quiet house or at a bar with people screaming in your ear, the game is the same no matter where you watch it. So what does " The Game Within The Game " mean? Simply put, we all wait anxiously wait for the game itself, but what not many people realize is that the fans who are at the game can make an impact too.

The Steelers fans and Cardinals fans who are attending the game, will have a battle during the game. No not a physical battle ( though it may result in some rumblings after the game ), but a vocal battle. I'm not saying that whoever has the loudest side is going to win, but having the loudest side is always an advantage. The fans play a key role in the Super Bowl, where momentum is everything.

The Steelers fans' have a long history, filled with many cheers and Super Bowl rings. Oh, and don't forget about the Terrible Towel. Loved by the Steelers fans, and hated by the opposition, the Terrible Towel is the symbol for all Steelers fans. Pittsburgh fans are closer in distance to Tampa Bay, and add that to the dedication the Steelers' fans have to their team, and you have a parade of Steelers fans marching into Tampa Bay.

On the other side are the Cardinals' fans. They are not accustomed to the Super Bowl, I mean it has been 61 years since their last. But don't take anything away from them. Just look what the fans did to Donovan McNabb's house in Arizona, they hung an Arizona flag and burned 'Go Cards' on his lawn. They don't have anything like the Terrible Towel, but they are as excited as anyone of the Steelers' fans are.

What's one way to find out who has the best chance to win the superbowl? No, not simulate it on Madden! The absolute best way to do so is to compare their starting line-ups. Who has better players at each position? We at PigSkin Pros will break it down for you:

Quarterbacks: Roethlisberger vs. Warner
Ben Roethlisberger has defeated the Baltimore Ravens three times. He definetely deserves credit for that. However, Kurt Warner has played outstanding so far this post season, passing for 770 yards and 8 TD's. This will be "Big Ben's" second time to the "Big Dance". Warner's third time, but first since 2001. Doesn't matter. Kurt Warner has the edge here for his outstand play throughout his entire career in the post season.
The Pick: Arizona

Runningbacks: Parker vs. James/Hightower/Arrington
Fast Willie Parker returned from injury to lead the Steelers running game. Although he didn't impress vs. Baltimore, I feel that he has worked his kinks out and will be ready for the not-so-bad-not-so-good Arizona run defense. Edgerrin James has come out of the Arizona desert these past few playoff weeks, to emerge as a fresh, reliable running back. Hightower has really slowed down, despite a decent regular season. Arrington can be used in the passing game. However, so can Parker.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Receivers: Ward/Holmes/Washington vs. Fitzgerald/Boldin/Breaston
This is where the Arizona sun shines brighest. The high powered Arizona offense is captained by Kurt Warner but brought to life by the fantastic three: Fitz, Boldin, and Breaston. Any one of these three can go the distance. Fitzgerald is a Top 3 Receiver, and can be argued to be the best in the league. Boldin can very well be in the Top 10. Steve Breaston was reliable in the regular season, and one of Kurt Warner's favorite targets. The Steelers on the otherhand, not so great. Hines Ward is an excellent possession receiver, and a great down field blocker, but the deep-threat is not there. Santonio Holmes, the speedy guy, has been very inconsistent this season, despite scoring a rather "lucky" touchdown last week when CB Corey Ivy slipped in coverage. Nate Washington is good for one big play a game. Fitzgerald? One big play a quarter.
The Pick: Arizona

Offensive Line:
Ben Roethlisberger has been sacked way too many times this season. Kurt Warner? Not so much. The Steelers line has a rather excellent run block, although the Cardinals' push isn't something to sneeze at. The big difference is the pass block. Roethlisberger had taken 46 sacks in the regular season. Warner, 26, despite having 129 more passing attempts than Big Ben. Simple. Simple. Simple....Oh wait, they're playing the confusing, quarterback killing, Dick LeBeau-run, Steeler Defense? I don't care.
The Pick: Arizona

Defensive Line:
The Pittsburgh Defense isn't number one in the league because their defensive lineman are girl scouts. No, No, No. In fact, if you called Casey Hampton a girl scout...he would probably eat you. The Chargers could not run on Pittsburgh, and neither could the run-heavy Ravens. The Steelers did not allow a 100 yard rusher all season! The Steel Curtain #2 also gets plenty of pass rush from Smith and Keisel. The Arizona line is mediocre. Sure, they have Darnell Dockett and Bertrund Berry, but let's get serious. Casey Hampton is Docket and Berry combined. Despite the Cardinal defensive line holding Michael Turner, DeAngelo Williams, Johnathan Stewart, and Brian Westbrook intact, I feel they are not as good as the men in black and gold.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Linebackers:
Karlos Dansby and Chike Okeafor will have to bring their A game's A game to match the level of play of Pittsburgh's James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley, who together, form some out of this world, quarterback sacking, mega monster machine. James Harrison is the NFL Defensive MVP of the 2008 Regular season, and lets just say, Chike Okeafor is not. Pittsburgh can do it all. They can blitz and stop the run. This is about as lopsided as Casey Hampton and Ken Whisenhunt on a see-saw.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Secondary:
When Ed Reed is out of the picture, Troy Polamalu becomes the best safety in the league. Polamalu is a magnetically attracted to the ball, for he is always around it, either making a hard tackle or picking it off. Safeties Antrell Rolle and Adrian Wilson bring a lot of attitude to the game, but this debate was over at Troy. Ike Taylor and DeShea Townsend are very good, but very underrated NFL cornerbacks. They will have trouble vs. Fitzgerald and company. However, Big Ben will have just as much success with Rookie Cromartie-Rodgers and Rod Hood.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Special Teams:
Jeff "Quadzilla" Reed, whose right kicking quad is bigger than the quad in my shed, is about as clutch as they get when it comes to field goal kicking. Rackers is decent. Arizona may have the edge at punter, but the return game is pretty much even. Breaston and Arrington are very good return men, and Santonio Holmes can make a big play happen at anytime. However, I will not resort to a tie. Steelers get this spot, just because of Reed's huge quads.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Coaching:
Both head coaches are head-coaching in their first superbowl. Whisenhunt has already received a superbowl ring though, winning it with the Steelers when he was the offensive coordinator in 2005. The big kahuna here is Steelers' defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, who is referred by me as the "Einstein of the Blitz". He confuses more quarterbacks than Brett Favre confuses what team he is playing for. (High Interception Rate joke...get it? No? Well I'll think of a better one later). I feel that the head coaches and offensive coordinators are even. But, Dick LeBeau commands that you call him "Daddy" on Sunday's.
The Pick: Pittsburgh

Arizona's high powered offense against Pittsburgh's high powered defense. A great match-up indeed. I could add an "Overall" comparison, but I feel that could be taking away from tomorrow's prediction. Despite Pittsburgh being a bit superior in terms of our comparisons, there is no doubt that Arizona is a hot team and playing very, very well. It should be one heck of a game, that we can all enjoy.

The Arizona Cardinals opened their preseason with Matt Leinart as their starting quarterback, and I mean at that time, who would have thought Kurt Warner would lead the team to the playoffs, let alone the Superbowl? However, during a preseason game with the Oakland Raiders, Leinart was 4-12 passing, with three interceptions. That's definetely not what Coach Whisenhunt wanted to see. However, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to the franchise, as Kurt Warner was named starter for Regular Season Week 1.

They finished the regular season 9-7, and secured the NFC West Division. If you looked at their scores, you could tell that their offense was powerful. At the end of the season, they struggled a bit, getting blown out at home to the inferior Vikings and losing in Foxboro by 40 points. Nonetheless, they entered the playoffs with a chip on their shoulder.

They were challenged by the rookie, Matt Ryan, at home. They stunned the sports world when they went into Carolina, who was 8-0 at home, and absolutely had their way with them. They were overwhelming the Eagles until late in the game, when the Eagles went up 25-24. However, Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, and Edgerrin James capped off a seven-minute touchdown drive that put the game away. The Cardinals, as a franchise, find themselves in the Superbowl for the first time in team history. Its kind of ironic that they play a franchise in the Steelers, that is tied for the most superbowl victories.

Brady's Back

In a report released by the Boston Globe, they confirm that quarterback Tom Brady is recovering from ACL and MCL surgery rather smoothly, and even performing drop backs and throwing passes.

If you can recall back to Week 1 of the 2008 NFL Season, Tom Brady was severely injured on a low hit delivered by Kansas City Chiefs Safety Bernard Pollard.

Brady is "on track to be fine for (Week 1 in 2009)," says the Boston Globe. "He had a shaky start, but he's caught up."

Despite the 2007 NFL MVP missing the entire season, the New England Patrioits, under Matt Cassel, did fairly well. They went 11-5, but fell short of the playoffs. The situation in New England could get messy, as Cassel may want to look for another option besides the bench. He had an amazing regular season, after performing putridly early in the NFL Preseason.

The rest of the league would probably rather have Cassel at the helm. Randy Moss and the Patriots; probably Brady. The decision is up to the mysterious mind of Coach Bill Belichick.

Welcome To Hollywood T.O

We all knew this day would come, the day when Terrell Owens would officially have his own television show. The controversial star will have his own reality show broadcasted on VH1. The show will air in the summer, giving fans a look at T.O's life on and off the field. VH1 announced the show will take place in the offseason, with Monique Jackson and Kita Williams helping T.O "re-examine" his life. Both women will be Owens' therapists and matchmakers. T.O previously aired on HBO's "Hard Knocks" that tracked the Cowboys' training camp.

I don't know what the fans think about this, but personally I think this is great. I'm not saying I am a big T.O fan, but he is a very entertaining person. The show has some great potential, and if T.O acts the way that I think he will, this will be a very popular show. VH1 made a great decision by broadcasting a show based on T.O. We all know how T.O acts on and off the field, but now we see it on a weekly basis. The one part I don't understand is the part where Monique Jackson and Kita Williams play matchmakers for T.O. I mean, why does T.O need help getting a date? Is it because he really is as arrogant and cocky as he appears to be? Well I know I will be watching this show, and hopefully I find out the truth behind Terrell Owens.

Ray Lewis Headed To Dallas?

Reports have surfaced around Baltimore that the Dallas Cowboys are very interested in acquiring the 10 time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl MVP, Ray Lewis. The contract is said to be around $27 million and $30 million with 3 years on the deal. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones feels that Lewis may be what the team needs in the locker room. Lewis' intensity on and off the field could provide the spark this team needs.

In my opinion, Ray Lewis would fit great with Dallas' defense. The Cowboys defense is filled with talent and speed, but lacks experiance, especially in the postseason. Lewis would greatly help players like Bradie James and DeMarcus Ware, both of whom are still young but are terrific defenders. The Cowboys have been a dissappointment in the past couple of years. Their roster is filled with top notch talent, but they have not produced to their full potential.

The Dallas defense ranked 12th in the league in rush defense and 5th in pass defense. Offenses would dread going up against a Cowboys defense that consisted of DeMarcus Ware, Greg Ellis, Bradie James and Ray Lewis. If Dallas can snatch Ray Lewis in the offseason, expect Dallas to be better then ever, and hopefully not blowing it as they have in the past seasons.

Will Collins Start In 2009?

A team source told ESPN's Chris Mortenson that head coach, Jeff Fisher, met with Kerry Collins and discussed the idea of him being the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans in 2009. Collins was reportedly thrilled with the news, threatening to retire if he did not receive a contract from the Titans.

Something bugs me here. In fact, I know what it is. It is the mediocrity of Kerry Collins' play, and I feel that the Tennessee Titans would be making a huge mistake if they named him the starter next year.

Let's look at the facts. Kerry Collins is a good quarterback. He is an expert at managing the game and "not losing" it. However, Collins had a measly 12 touchdown passes in 17 games this season, including playoffs. He also threw it to the opposite jersey 7 times. Is this who the Titans want to get them over the hump, and to lead them to the Superbowl? Collins was also 24th in the entire NFL in passing yardage.

The Tennessee Titans used their excellent running game, and immovable defense to go 13-3 during the regular season and win the AFC South. These two luxeries were the formula to their rather successful 2008 season. Having a mediocre, aging Kerry Collins as the starting quarterback for the 2009 season will once again place the Titans in the good-but-not-great status.

One can almost guarantee that the Titans will look for an offensive playmaker in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. After all, the current wide receiver situation in Tennessee will not make opposing defenses stay up at night any time soon. Can we blame Collins' numbers on his lack of wide receivers? Maybe Fisher would open the offense more if they had, say...Percy Harvin? Or Darius Heyward-Bey?

Do I think Kerry Collins is better than some of the other starters in the league? Yes. Do I think he is a bad quarterback? Of course not. However, I just feel that with Collins, this offensive attack will never be what it can potentially be.

I believe things will turn out rather interestingly in Tennessee for the 2009 season, as I expect quarterback Vince Young to sit down, take a look at himself in the mirror, and give Collins a run for his money.

The Good and The Bad from the 2009 Senior Bowl

The Senior Bowl is the last chance for NFL hopefuls to secure their spot in this year's draft. The game is not just another game, for some, it might be their last game they ever play. If you think it's not important, just look at the two teams in the Super Bowl. The Steelers and Cardinals have a combined 36 former Senior Bowl participants. This year's game is no different from previous games. There are many players who need to show they have the talent that all the scouts want, and some players are still competing just to get recognized. So how did this year's Senior Bowl participants make out? Here's the rundown of the good, the bad and the ugly of this year's Senior Bowl.

The good from this year's game came from the South Quarterbacks. West Virginia QB Pat White proved all the scouts wrong, showing he has potential to be a NFL quarterback. White was named MVP of the game, throwing for 95 yards and 1 touchdown. Former Crimson Tide QB John Parker Wilson scored the game's first TD on a 4 yard run, while Clemson QB Cullen Harper threw for 44 yards. Also, Tennessee defensive end Robert Ayers might of improved his draft stock the most during the week. Before this week, Ayers looked like a second day pick, but after the game, he appeared to cement his spot on day one of the NFL draft.

Graham Harrell may have killed his chances after last night's game. His accuracy was not where he needed it, and his arm strength was just not what the scout's wanted to see. For Texas Tech, Harrell put up amazing numbers, but sometimes stats do not get you into the NFL, just look at former Hawaii QB's Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan. The same went for Rhett Bomar, who may have dimished his NFL hopes. Florida State receiver Greg Carr looked like Terrell Owens, but not the good side of T.O. Carr had too many drops in the game, crushing his draft status.

Another One Bites The Dust

The off season; When head coaches drop faster than Terrell Owens' catches. When owners of the most disappointing gridiron teams look for new brains to lead their men; When fans of a losing team can lift their heads up high and rally around a new man. Yes, it's the off season, and it's one of the most exciting times of the NFL year.

So far this off season, seven head coaches have received the pink slip. The most recent firing coming from Kansas City. Herm "You play to win the game!" Edwards, who was 15-34 in three seasons with Chiefs, was told Friday that he would no longer be the team's head coach.

"That's OK," Edwards told FOXSports.com. "I told (Pioli) I didn't need an explanation. I understand the business. I'm OK with it."

Chiefs fans can recall a trade in 2006, when the New York Jets "traded" Herm Edwards to the Chiefs, who in return received a compensatory 4th round draft pick. Who did the Jets select with that pick? Leon Washington, a running back from Florida State. In 2008, Leon Washington averaged 5.9 yards a carry, complemented by 6 rushing touchdowns as a backup role in the Jets backfield. In 2008, Herm Edwards averaged one win every eight games. Who would you rather have? We know who got the better end of that exchange.

Who will be tribe leader for the Chiefs next season? I'm not sure if they even know. Either way, newly appointed GM Scott Pioli definitely has his work cut out for him. Getting this 2-14 team back on the competitive path will be difficult, but not impossible. Chiefs fans should be praying for the big turn-around that happened to the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons this year, to happen to them in 2009.
